California based Super Talent Technology made waves yesterday when it announced that all of its latest MasterDrive MX SSDs are to be priced under $1000.

With the Solid-state Drive looking more and more appealing as the days go by it was only a matter of time before the prices started to drop, however the fact that this drop occurred so suddenly is quite a surprise. Not too long ago Super Talent announced the 2.5” 256 GB SATA SSD for a little under $6,000.

The MasterDrive MX is available in 30 GB, 60 GB, and 120 GB versions, which are priced at $299, $449, and $649 respectively, which is amazing value. Unfortunately, the affordable prices do mean there’s got to be a catch somewhere. The MasterDrive MXs contain MLC NAND memory which means that while the read speed is a fairly respectable 120 MB/sec, write speeds aren’t nearly as good as what you’d get with an SLC drive.

Super Talent does do an SLC version, the MasterDrive DX but you pay for performance. The 30 GB version is going to set you back $699 while the 60 GB version is priced at $1,299, with those extra few bucks upping your write performance from 40 MB/sec to 70 MB/sec.

The price of SSD storage is set, according to some industry analysts, to half every nine months with prices now entering the truly mainstream end of the market.

The introduction of the Intel P35 'BearLake' chipset ushers in with it a whole new memory technology, DDR3. As an active member of the JEDEC Association, Super Talent engineers helped define the DDR3 standards for unbuffered DIMMs, SO-DIMMs, and registered DIMMs. As DDR2 approaches the limits of what it can reach in clock speeds at around 1000MHz, DDR3 will support significantly higher clock speeds, scaling up to 1600MHz or higher in the coming year. Although JEDEC specs for DDR3 begin at 800MHz, DDR3-800 will be skipped over completely in favor of 1066MHz or faster speeds. The current drive among DRAM chip fabs toward smaller manufacturing geometries will likely result in sharp increases in DDR3 clock speeds later this year.

DDR3 operates at only 1.5 Volts, versus 1.8V for DDR2. According to Ohms Law (P = I x V), power consumption is directly proportional to operating voltage. So this voltage reduction results in a dramatic reduction in power consumption. A DDR3 module will use approximately 17% less power than a DDR2 module of the same speed. Of course, higher frequency memory draws more current, so faster DDR3 modules will still draw as much or more power than their slower DDR2 siblings.

Super Talent has been testing our own DDR3 modules for months now. We have built sample modules using several different DRAM vendors. Due to our early investment in DDR3 technology, we are now able to offer 1066 and 1333MHz DDR3 modules and kits. These products have been tested extensively on multiple P35 motherboards to ensure compatibility and reliability. Dual Channel kits have been tested as a matched pair to guarantee performance at their rated specs.

Because high-speed DDR3 modules do generate more heat, Super Talent attaches distinctive black High Efficiency (HE) cast aluminum heat spreaders to our Extreme Performance modules. Our Desktop grade modules are cooled by our Classic aluminum heat spreaders. These products will be available in June from Super Talent, and higher speed and lower latency DDR3 products will be introduced soon.

Super Talent’s ultra reliable FB-DIMM offerings just got bigger…and faster! Our new 4GB FB-DIMM doubles previous memory scalability limits in high-end servers. These 4GB FB-DIMMs were designed for use in the latest Intel® Xeon® server boards based on the Intel 5000P (Blackford) chipset. These JEDEC compliant 240-pin dual rank modules are organized as 512Megabit x 72. Thirty-six pieces of 256Megabit x4 DRAM chips in FBGA packages are used to build these modules. These modules have already been validated in the Intel 5000PSL and other leading server boards.

Super Talent is also shattering speed barriers in the server memory subsystem with new 800MHz FB-DIMMs. These modules are designed to deliver both reliability and performance in cutting edge servers. Many months of Engineering efforts have finally paid off with our announcement this month of a full range of Solid State Disk (SSD) drives using an industry standard Serial ATA interface.

This new line of SATA drives is 100% compatible with conventional hard disk drives. However, these products are built with only solid state Flash components. Since they contain no moving parts, SSD drives have the advantage of being far more rugged and reliable than regular hard drives, while using 85% less power. Moreover, because SSD drives are built using Flash technology, they offer sequential transfer speed comparable to magnetic drives and dramatically faster access speed.
